Miller Knight complete balcony remediation at James Watt Way using AliDeck aluminium decking system | Fire-Safe Balcony Solutions

AliDeck partnered with Miller Knight to help deliver a high-quality balcony remediation project at James Watt Way. As the UK’s leading supplier of aluminium balcony component systems, we provided a fully non-combustible solution including our Senior Ridged Decking Board, Low Joist, Supa Joist, bespoke brackets, and tapered angles—ensuring full compliance and long-term safety for residents.

AliDeck continues to lead the industry in supplying futureproof, regulation-compliant aluminium balcony systems for both remediation and new build projects. With all products extruded in the UK and powder-coated in-house, we help our partners deliver on safety, speed, and reliability—ensuring project success built-in at every stage.

For this remediation, we worked alongside Miller Knight, an experienced contractor specialising in recladding and fire safety works. Our involvement supported them in achieving a compliant finish that exceeded client expectations and delivered peace of mind to residents.

Safe, high-performance aluminium decking system for long-term compliance

The balconies at James Watt Way had previously been fitted with combustible materials that no longer met the requirements of updated fire safety regulations. As part of a full remediation, these were removed and replaced with AliDeck’s non-combustible aluminium decking system.

At the heart of this upgrade was our Senior Ridged Aluminium Decking Board—selected for its excellent slip resistance, heavy-load capacity, and long lifespan. To suit the layout and varied heights across balconies, we supplied a mix of Low Joist and Supa Joist options, allowing for smooth and efficient installation across the project.

To deliver clean and accurate detailing, AliDeck also supplied bespoke bracketry and tapered angles for balcony perimeters. These tailored elements supported a neat finish while saving time on-site by avoiding the need for complicated cuts or modifications.

All decking system elements were finished in our in-house powder-coating facility, to the Qualicoat Seaside Standard using Class 2 powder coating and a seven-stage pre-treatment process including acid etching to 2g/m². This ensures long-term resistance to corrosion, UV exposure, and weathering—providing an enhanced finish that goes far beyond standard architectural coatings.

A non-combustible aluminium decking system that meets the highest standards

AliDeck’s aluminium decking systems are fully tested and certified to meet Euroclass fire ratings of A2-s1, d0 and A2fl-s1, helping contractors meet the latest BS 8579:2020 and Building Safety Act 2022 requirements. At James Watt Way, these high-performance materials replaced combustible legacy materials to significantly reduce fire risk for residents.

With a minimum 60-year life expectancy, the AliDeck decking system is engineered for long-term performance with minimal maintenance—making it a future proof solution for housing associations, developers, and contractors involved in remediation projects.

Thanks to our UK-based manufacturing, short lead times, and expert support, Miller Knight was able to complete this project efficiently and to a high standard. Our collaborative approach helped ensure smooth delivery of the decking system, from design through to installation.

AliDeck’s role in this project extended beyond just supply—we provided a coordinated aluminium decking system that met all compliance demands while achieving a clean, modern aesthetic. The result is a safer, more durable outdoor space that residents can enjoy with confidence.

This project is yet another demonstration of how our high-performing aluminium decking supports fire-safe upgrades in residential buildings across the UK.
