Balcony Fire At Guy Ritchie’s London Pub Highlights Danger Of Combustible Materials on Balconies

The danger of combustible materials on balconies was highlighted this weekend as a fire broke out on a balcony at the rear of film director Guy Ritchie’s pub in London.

London Fire Brigade attended the fire at the Lore Of The Land pub in Fitzrovia and were fortunately able to quickly extinguish it. An electrical unit malfunction is thought to have caused the fierce blaze but the quick action of the fire service prevented the fire spreading and any injuries occurring. This is the second fire at the pub in the last year, with a major fire in June 2021 damaging the top floor interior and roof.

This fire underlines the extreme danger of combustible materials on balconies. The wooden decking and balustrade cladding on this balcony allowed the fire to take hold and pose a serious risk to the building and its neighbouring properties.

The AliDeck Balcony Fires Report revealed the shocking extent of fires on balconies across the UK, with hundreds of such fires occurring every year.

While most balcony fires are caused by human behaviours such as smoking or use of candles, fires are also regularly caused by the malfunction electrical equipment. In these instances where there are combustible materials such as timber or composite decking, the risk of fire spread is greatly magnified.

The surest solution to achieving fire safety on balconies is to remove and replace all combustible materials with non-combustible alternatives such as aluminium decking. This simple remedy hugely minimises the risk of a dangerous fire occurring on balconies, whatever the cause.
