Ensuring Balcony Safety: Load Performance & Deflection Testing for AliRail Systems
At AliDeck, we take pride in being the market leader for aluminium decking solutions, offering unparalleled quality for balconies, terraces and walkways. We make sure all our systems are tested to standards that are specific for you, with our test result data are indicative only.
Compliance with building regulations is paramount in the construction industry, influencing our decision-making process and inspiring the creation of new products that excel. This commitment can be seen on our recent test of our Rail systems:
Insight Glass Testing & Results
To start, we tested our Insight Glass to 3 different methods to ensure its performance and compliance with industry standards.
1. Load Performance Testing
- What was the Test?
-
- The complete Insight Glass balustrade system, including aluminium framing and glass infill, was subjected to horizontal line load testing to assess its ability to withstand forces applied along the length of the balustrade, in line with residential balcony requirements.
- What were the Results & Benefits?
-
- The system successfully achieved a 0.74kN/m line load, confirming compliance with residential balustrade loading standards. This result demonstrates that the system can safely resist everyday forces, such as leaning and crowd pressure, giving designers, building control and end users confidence in long-term structural performance.
2. Point Load Deflection Training
- What was the Test?
-
- A concentrated point load was applied directly to the glass panel to measure deflection under localised force, simulating impacts or pressure applied to a single point on the balustrade.
- What were the Results & Benefits?
-
- The 19mm fire-rated glass deflected just 1.6mm, compared to an allowable tolerance of up to 16mm. This extremely low deflection confirms exceptional glass rigidity, reducing the risk of excessive movement, visual distortion, or user discomfort while enhancing perceived quality and safety.
3. Fire Performance (Glass Specification)
- What was the Test?
-
- The Insight Glass system is designed to accommodate 19mm fire-rated glass, tested separately for reaction to fire performance and suitability for use on buildings subject to heightened fire safety requirements.
- What were the Results & Benefits?
-
- The specified glass achieved an A2-s1, d0 reaction to fire classification, supporting compliance on buildings above 11m. This allows architects and developers to specify a visually open glass balustrade solution without compromising on fire safety, supporting safer balcony design in higher-risk residential buildings.
Juliet Balconies Testing & Results
Compliance with building regulations is central to our approach, driving product development and safety performance. This commitment led us to retest the Juliet and Vertical Infill Spindle Balustrade systems for load performance.
1. Load Performance Testing
- What was the Test?
-
- The Juliette balcony balustrade system, including the handrail, vertical infill and spindle elements, was subjected to deflection and load testing well beyond standard residential requirements. This was originally tested in 2022 and then retested to verify performance under updated design criteria. The tests followed the horizontal and localised load checks set out in BS 6180:2011 for barriers in and about buildings.
- What were the Results & Benefits?
-
- It was tested to 0.74kN/m and it passed with flying colours. This shows robust performance for residential environments.
- Why does this Testing Matter?
-
- Assured Compliance across Applications: Meets and exceeds BS 6180:2011 for barriers around buildings, supporting both residential and more demanding public spaces such as bars, restaurants and communal areas.
- Greater Design Confidence: Designers and specifiers can rely on independent test evidence rather than manufacturer claims alone, which is important for building control approval and risk mitigation.
- Proof of Aluminium Performance: Demonstrates that a purpose-designed aluminium balustrade system can achieve high structural performance, reduced weight and corrosion resistance compared to alternatives.
Vertical Infill Testing & Results
Compliance with building regulations is central to our approach, driving product development and safety performance. This commitment led us to retest the Juliet and Vertical Infill Spindle Balustrade systems for load performance.
1. Horizontal Line & Infill Load Testing
- What was the Test?
-
- The vertical infill balustrade fixed via the Top-Fix PFC method was tested for horizontal line load, infill point load and infill distributed load in line with BS 6180:2011. These tests simulate real-world loads the balustrade will face, including uniform pushes along the rail and concentrated loads on the infill elements.
- What were the Results & Benefits?
-
- The system achieved both 0.74kN/m horizontal line loads, 0.5kN infill point load and 1.0kN/m² infill distributed load. The benefit of this was being able to demonstrate the performance at both residential (0.74kN/m) and elevated loading (1.5kN/m) all while maintaining compliance with UK standards.
2. Destructive Load Testing Dimensions
- What was the Test?
- The Top-Fix PFC balustrade was also destructively tested on large span samples (e.g. 6m x 1.5m) to access performance limits and validate load capabilities beyond basic compliance levels.
- What were the Results & Benefits?
- These tests confirmed robust performance across larger structures, showing the system maintains structural integrity even when assembled at scale and under significant load scenarios. Independent destruction tests strengthen confidence in the product’s durability and suitability for larger balcony spans and architectural designs that push typical performance boundaries.
3. Fire Resistance & Coating Durability
- What was the Test?
- In addition to load tests, the Top-Fix PFC balustrade undergoes supplementary durability evaluations, including fire resistance to A2-s1, d0, impact resistance, corrosion resistance, adhesion (Qualicoat), and weathering tests. This is to verify performance characteristics of the system’s finish and resilience.
- What were the Results & Benefits?
- Achieving A2-s1, d0 fire classification and passing various coating and durability tests ensures the system is not only structurally strong but also performs well in real-world environmental and safety conditions. This means end-users and project teams can specify the system with confidence that it meets both structural load and long-term performance expectation, reducing maintenance concerns and supporting long product life in external applications.
