Balcony fire in Bow, London caused by carelessly discarded cigarette

It was sad to see this week yet another balcony fire in the news.

The fire occurred on a sixth-floor balcony on a block in Bow, London, and London Fire Brigade (LFB) have determined the cause as the careless disposal of a cigarette igniting the combustible balcony materials.

London Fire Brigade contain balcony fire in Bow

While there were fortunately no injuries and LFB were able to quickly contain and extinguish the fire, it is another clear demonstration of the pressing need to remove and replace combustible materials on balconies with fire-safe alternatives.

The AliDeck Balcony Fires Report revealed the shocking scale of fires on balconies, and how smoking caused almost half of all balcony fires between 2017 and 2020. The removal of combustible materials from balconies is the only practical solution to minimise the occurrence of these fires.
