For all stakeholders in construction, it is important to find off-the-shelf, quick-fit solutions to save on both time and labour costs. With thousands of buildings in dire need of remediation/regeneration in order to meet the latest building safety standards, AliDeck’s versatile range of aluminium decking and balcony components are leading the way as the de facto standard for steel frame balconies.

AliDeck Decking Joists, also often known as Decking Bearers, are non-combustible and fire-rated A2-s1, d0 (and A1 when supplied uncoated in mill-finish) so are fully compliant with all fire performance requirements in the Building Regulations. That makes them an ideal solution when specifying a project, but these are not the only benefits available thanks to the versatile design and robust nature of aluminium as a material.

How to fix aluminium decking joist supports directly to steel frame balconies

Commonly, our Adjustable Pedestal Brackets create a simple and robust way for the decking structure (boards and decking sub-frame) to meet the required build-up height on any concrete or steel frame balcony. If adjustable height is not required, though, our aluminium decking joists allow installers to fix the joists directly into the steel balcony frame, removing the need for adjustable pedestal brackets.

By drilling a hole into the steel framework, you can bolt the aluminium decking joists directly into the steels. Bolts are inserted into the channel sections of the joist along the joist underside and secured through the steelwork. Further bolts are then added upward-facing to the joist bolt channels topside which will are securely bolted to the decking boards. This create a secure and safe decking system with minimal penetration into the steel framework, and fewer component parts for a quicker installation overall.

We recommend using non-combustible tape between the aluminium and steel as this will create an imperforate barrier between the two metals, helping to prevent galvanic corrosion. We also recommend that any drilled holes into the steel are suitably treated before installation of the decking system.

Aluminium a sustainable and versatile option for balcony decking systems

Aluminium makes for significant weight savings in comparison to alternative non-combustible materials such as steel balcony construction. AliDeck have a range of decking joist support options available to suit all requirements.

Our Supa Joist is able to span up to 3500mm while our highly popular Low Joist spans up to 1200mm, and even up to 1500mm when installed on its side! At the other end of the scale, our lightweight and cost-effective Lite Joist, designed as a streamlined entry-level option, spans a respectable 800mm while our ultra-low-profile Micro Joist spans 300mm while delivering a build-up of only 20mm.

We have carefully designed the AliDeck System to meet the needs of steel fabricators, balcony manufacturers, main contractors, architects, and specifiers. As a company, we have developed both our products and our services to facilitate the achievement of project success for balcony, terrace, and walkway projects.
