How to cut aluminium decking boards to length, width, diagonally, and to curves

One of the many benefits to using our AliDeck Fire Rated Decking Boards is that they are highly versatile but with a host of other beneficial features that have seen aluminium become the new de facto standard within the industry.

Installing an aluminium decking system is no more complex or difficult than working with timber or composite decking. Whatever the project requirements, completing a tidy and sound job is simple, with a variety of cutting options easily achievable to attain a perfect finish.

Practical steps for cutting aluminium decking to length, width, diagonally, or curved

Firstly, when cutting aluminium decking, it is essential to firmly secure the board into place to avoid it moving around under the power of the saw. We recommend fixing to blocks of wood secured to trestles.

To cut aluminium decking cleanly, safely, and with precision you will need suitable equipment, as follows;

Tools required:

  • Chop Saw, circular saw, or jig saw (for radius/curved cuts)
  • Saw blade suitable for cutting aluminium (recommended 60 to 80 tooth)
  • Trestles
  • Tape measure
  • Marker pen
  • Masking tape
  • Sandpaper or metal file
  • Touch-up spray
  • PPE (gloves, goggles etc.)

It is imperative that the central fixing channel must not be compromised when cutting the aluminium decking to width, as the board will lose its structural integrity and the fixing channel clip will no longer be able to be fitted.

Cutting tools should only be used in-line with the manufacturer’s guidance and by experienced professionals only.

Please watch the following instructional video to see the simple actions required for any cut to an AliDeck aluminium decking board.

Upon completion of your cut, the bare edges must receive three coats of ‘touch-up’ paint to match the colour of the boards. We can supply colour-matched spray paint on request. The spray paint should naturally dry in 10-25 minutes, but this can be sped up with the careful use of a heat gun if required.

A careful and methodical approach to cutting your aluminium decking boards will result in the best outcomes. Safety is the most crucial aspect, but the correct handling of the tools and material will also help to guarantee the finest finish.
