Real World Examples Of Balcony Fires Caused By Cigarettes 2

With Stoptober well underway, anybody that is able to kick the habit permanently will be ensuring a more fire safe future for themselves.

Smoking materials are responsible for nearly half of all fires on balconies. By quitting, the risk is reduced and we will hopefully see fewer balcony fires.

Here are some further examples of fires on balconies that have occurred recently;

Stratford – February 2019

In February of 2019, a balcony fire was caused on the 19th floor of a tower block. This was on account of a discarded cigarette setting some rubbish alight. 200 people had to evacuate the building in Glasshouse Gardens, Stratford, leaving 60 firefights to put out the fire.

Scarborough – February 2019

In the Northstead area, a fire occurred when an accidental drop of a cigarette set fire to a balcony. This incident happened on the second floor of a flat, calling two crews to scene but luckily nobody left injured.

Hampshire – July 2019

A flat in Moorlands Crescent, Harefield, was left unattended when several glass jars used to store cigarette butts caught fire. Two crews arrived at the scene of the fire on the first-floor balcony and were able to put it out quickly.
