Real World Examples Of Balcony Fires Caused By Cigarettes 1

Stoptober is an opportunity to help people understand that the dangers posed by smoking extend far beyond just the negative health impacts.

Our recent research showed that smoking is by far and away the leading cause of fires on balconies, with at least 420 balcony blazes occurring around Britain in the previous three years.

Here are some examples of actual balcony fires that have occurred between 2017 and 2020;

Kennington – June 2020

In June, 60 firefighters from London Fire Brigade battled a balcony fire at a tower block on Otto Street in Kennington. The Brigade’s investigators believe the cause was a carelessly discarded cigarette from an upper floor. A flat on the first floor was badly damaged, and 18 people were treated at the scene by medics.

Wembley – May 2019

An unsafe disposal of smoking materials caused a balcony blaze on the 13th floor of a tower block. This incident took place in May 2019 on Hatton Road, Wembley. Eight fire engines and 60 firefighters were called out to the scene of this balcony fire, all caused from a discarded cigarette. Luckily, no-one was believed to have been Inured.

Southwark – June 2017

In Southwark, Aylesbury Estate, a balcony fire was again caused by a cigarette. Fire crews were called to the scene, as well as police and an air ambulance. However, everyone involved in the fire was evacuated safely and no one was left injured. London Fire Brigade urge people to understand the importance of ensuring your cigarette is disposed of carefully.
