Report finds devastating Bolton fire started by discarded cigarette

The devastating fire at The Cube student accommodation in Bolton last November was a chilling echo of the Grenfell tragedy. Miraculously, all residents survived due to the timely and brave intervention of the Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service (GMFRS).

Last week, the GMFRS published their incident report into the fire. It makes for sobering reading as it describes the spread of the blaze and how the fire was started by a discarded cigarette on a balcony, a sadly common occurrence.

Rotten timber walkway underlines need to move to durable solutions

On a recent site visit we encountered a timber-decked walkway in a truly terrible condition, with boards rotten and collapsed throughout.

While this particular walkway will soon be replaced with a safe and durable option, there remain vast amounts of steadily-degrading timber in residential and commercial settings across the UK, all of which should be made safe by replacement with aluminium decking ASAP.
